A high school principal in Shenzhen, southern China's Guangdong Province, has recently drawn widespread attention online after responding to a student's request to remove a bird's nest from the school campus.

The incident began when a senior student at Baoan High School wrote a letter complaining that the noise of birds was disturbing his studies during the crucial final year before China's college entrance examinations. In his letter, the student asked the school to remove the nest to ensure a quieter environment.

In response, Yuan Weixing, the principal of Baoan High School, issued a public reply. While expressing understanding of the student's pressure and concerns, Yuan declined the request.

"I understand your urgency," he wrote, "but I cannot agree to remove the bird's nest. Not because I lack sympathy, but because I hope you can understand that the ultimate goal of education is not to make the world adapt to us, but to teach us how to live with it."

He added that the birds are part of the campus environment and witnesses to the students' youth, encouraging them to coexist with nature.

The principal's response has received mixed reactions online. Many praised his perspective, calling it "the true meaning of education" and applauding the school's values. Others argued that the immense pressure faced by senior students makes the request understandable.

Yuan provided a follow-up response on Friday, stating that he had contacted the student directly and provided him with earplugs to help mitigate the noise. He emphasized that, as an educator, he has a responsibility to guide students toward thoughtful reflection.

The student later responded on social media, expressing gratitude for the principal's guidance and the public's feedback. "I now have a new understanding of life and nature," he wrote.

In an interview, Yuan noted that sometimes the current education system focuses too heavily on scores and efficiency, attempting to eliminate all distractions and create a "sterile" environment for students.

"The era of one exam determining a lifetime has passed," he said. "Education is not about cleaning up the world, but about helping children find their place in the real world."

Yuan emphasized that true education lies in helping students develop the ability to cope with imperfections and challenges in the real world, rather than shielding them from them.
