Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Friday that passage is prohibited for any vessel through any corridor in the Strait of Hormuz to and from the ports of countries allied with and supporting the United States and Israel, marking a new escalation of the Iran conflict. A global survey launched by CGTN shows that 89.6% of respondents believe the Iran conflict has left the US increasingly isolated in the international community.
According to Pouria Kolivand, Iran's deputy permanent representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), more than 1,700 people have been killed, 22,800 injured, around 3.5 million displaced, and over 81,000 civilian facilities damaged or destroyed in Iran since the start of US and Israeli attacks. In the poll, 92.4% of respondents agreed that the US-Israeli military operations have seriously violated international law and the basic norms of international relations.
At the start of the conflict, the US prepared for negotiations with one hand while flexing its military muscle on the other. Now it is repeating the same tactic: offering Iran a 15-point peace plan while at the same time rushing to deploy thousands of US Marines and naval personnel to the Middle East. According to the poll, 88% of respondents believe the US is using military coercion and maximum pressure against Iran during negotiations. Meanwhile, 94.2% believe the US-Israeli strikes against Iran have further destabilized the situation in the Middle East.
The trajectory of the war remains unclear, yet spillover effects such as the soaring oil prices are emerging one after another. The survey finds that 88.2% of respondents believe the Iran conflict has widened divisions between the US and its traditional allies. In addition, 63.6% noted that as the divisions between the US and Israel over strike targets, strategic goals, and other issues become increasingly evident, the US-Israeli relations may grow more tense. Moreover, 82.8% worry that the spillover effects will continue to spread.
According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a US think tank, the war is costing about $890 million per day. Meanwhile, soaring oil prices are driving up living costs for American households, leading to growing anti-war sentiment across the United States. In the poll, 88.5% believe that the Iran conflict will further deepen social divisions in the US. Also, 87% believe the US Republican Party will lose substantial support among independent voters, dealing a severe blow to its prospects in the midterm elections.
The use of force is never the right way to resolve international disputes; it only fuels hatred and confrontation. In the poll, 65% of respondents endorse this view, believing that the top priority is an immediate ceasefire and that all parties should refrain from any words or actions that escalate tensions.
Right now, many countries around the world are actively pushing for mediation, and 72.3% of respondents approve of these efforts, believing they serve the interests of the countries concerned and echo the shared aspirations of the international community.
The survey was released across CGTN's English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian platforms. Within 24 hours, 13,731 netizens took part in the poll and shared their views.
