The China-aided Pak-China Friendship Hospital has seen a remarkable surge in activity, treating 48,656 patients in the first two months of 2026 alone. Now serving an average of 1,200 patients daily, the facility has become a vital lifeline for a community that once faced significant barriers to basic medical care.

During a recent visit to the hospital, Pakistan's Minister for Planning and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal emphasized that the true measure of CPEC lies beyond infrastructure. While ports and highways provide the framework for development, he noted that human welfare – specifically health and education – remains the heartbeat of the initiative. Managed by the Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN), the hospital stands as a testament to this vision, offering comprehensive medical services, from advanced diagnostics to inpatient meals, free of cost.

The impact of the facility over the past three years has been nothing short of transformative. The hospital has treated over 650,000 patients since it was established, effectively ending the era when local residents had to endure grueling journeys to distant cities for specialized treatment. The tide has now turned. Patients are traveling from across Balochistan and even across the border to seek care in Gwadar, reflecting a deep-seated public trust in the institution's management and quality of service.

Beyond clinical care, the hospital is a powerful engine for local socio-economic empowerment. Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, founder of IHHN, highlighted that the institution has prioritized local talent, with over 80% of its 487-member workforce recruited directly from the surrounding community. This commitment ensures that the benefits of international cooperation are felt in the daily lives and livelihoods of Gwadar's families.

Looking ahead, the hospital is poised to evolve from a healthcare provider into a center for medical excellence. Campus Head Dr. Affan Faiq Zada outlined an ambitious roadmap to expand clinical services from 15 to 25 departments and establish a School of Medical Technology. With plans for an integrated medical college and nursing school, the Pak-China Friendship Hospital is set to become a premier teaching institution, fostering a new generation of healthcare professionals and ensuring that the legacy of this partnership endures for decades to come.
