Opera Trails: How Pingju Opera has captured young hearts for generations

Chen Qingxuan, Xu Chenlu

With a history spanning more than a century, Pingju Opera is one of China's five major traditional opera genres. Far from fading with time, it has retained its vibrant charm across eras, winning the affection of new generations. This timeless art form continues to strike a chord and draw young audiences closer to its beauty.

As time passes, Pingju practitioners remain devoted to their art. Young performers are deeply attracted to opera from an early age; veteran actors serve as the backbone of the troupe; musicians enrich the stories with melodies; and theater staff work diligently behind the scenes. Passionate audiences, in particular, act as a source of artistic vitality for the performers, giving them endless strength and encouragement.

A first-class performer from the China Pingju Opera Theater, Wang Lijing, told CGTN she hopes young actors will continue to truly love Pingju Opera and stay true to their artistic roots. They should inherit and master the precious legacy left by senior artists, and cherish the people who support them. With sincerity and devotion, they can pass on Pingju Opera to new generations and keep it alive for many years to come.
