Chen Yuanyu of China defeated Dean Shu of New Zealand 3-1 in his first match in Group 12 at the ITTF Men's and Women's World Cup in China's Macao SAR on Monday.

The 24th-ranked Chen got off to a solid start, taking control early to clinch the opening game 11-8, before claiming the second by an identical 11-8 scoreline.

Shu responded resolutely in the third game, stepping up to attack and moving ahead early, before holding the advantage through key rallies and closing things out 11-8. Chen regrouped and dominated the fourth, taking the game 11-2 to complete a 3-1 victory.

In other action, China's Zhou Qihao fended off Japan's Ryuusei Kawakami 11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9 in his first match in Group 16.
