Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday called for a ceasefire with Russia during the Orthodox Easter period, proposing a mutual pause on strikes against energy infrastructure to ease pressures on global oil and gas markets.
"We are ready for a ceasefire during the Easter holidays," Zelenskyy told reporters via WhatsApp, adding that "normal people who respect life" should aim for a permanent end to hostilities.
"But we're ready for any compromises, except those involving our dignity and sovereignty," he said.
Orthodox Easter falls on April 16 this year.
Zelenskyy also noted that recent signals from Ukraine's international partners advised restraint against targeting Russian energy facilities. "If Russia stops attacking our energy infrastructure, we will refrain from striking theirs," he said.
There was no immediate response from Moscow.
