The death toll from heavy rainfall-triggered flooding across Afghanistan has risen to at least 99, with 154 others injured over the past nine days, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority said on Sunday.

Heavy downpours that began on March 26 have unleashed widespread flooding and landslides, accompanied by violent thunderstorms and lightning, causing extensive loss of life as well as severe financial and material damage, according to Hafiz Mohammad Yusuf Hammad, the authority's spokesman.

The disaster has completely or partially destroyed 5,000 houses, washed away 355 kilometers of roads and inundated more than 14,405 acres of agricultural land across the impoverished country, Hammad said, adding that a total of 8,532 families have been affected.

Rescue and relief teams have been deployed to the worst-hit areas, where emergency aid distribution is underway, while damage assessments continue, Hammad added.

Afghanistan's meteorological department has forecast continued heavy rainfall and issued fresh warnings of potential flooding in remote and vulnerable regions across all 34 provinces in the coming days.
