The street names of Taipei, in China's Taiwan region, form a miniature map of China in themselves. This story dates back to the mid-20th century. At that time, an architect named Zheng Dingbang was commissioned to name Taipei's streets. His method was quite unique: he overlaid a map of China over Taipei's street grid, and then, according to the cardinal directions – north, south, east and west – he assigned place names from across the Chinese mainland to the streets, one by one.
