British economist: China matches US in talent, excels in turning ideas into products

In a recent interview, John Ross, British economist and former director of economic and business policy for the mayor of London, said China and the United States have equally strong scientific talent – but differ in how quickly ideas become reality. He noted that China's larger investment scale – about twice that of the US in absolute terms – provides stronger financial backing per researcher, accelerating the transformation of innovation into market-ready products. Citing the electric vehicle sector, Ross pointed to China's rise from a minor player to the world's largest exporter in just six years as a clear example. He also dismissed claims of a so-called "China shock" or "over-exporting," arguing that China's cost-effective green products are helping lower global costs. Despite global economic and geopolitical uncertainties, Ross expressed pragmatic confidence in China's steady growth.
