The Daoyin Tu – often translated as the Drawing of "Daoyin," the Physical Exercise Chart – is the earliest surviving painted guide to therapeutic exercise in China. On a silk banner, 44 figures practice routines for health and longevity: men and women, the young and the old, each captured in a different pose, their movements echoing the rhythms of nature and the motions of birds and animals. In 1972, this exercise manual was unearthed from a tomb of a noble family in southern China, dated to around the 160s BC.
