China on Thursday called for respect for Lebanon's sovereignty and security and said it will continue efforts to help ease tensions and end the conflict in the Middle East.
At a regular press briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks when responding to a query about Israel's large-scale airstrikes on more than 100 targets in Lebanon within 10 minutes on Wednesday. Lebanon has declared April 9 a national day of mourning, while Iran said the strikes violated the ceasefire agreement and announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Mao said Lebanon's sovereignty and security should not be violated, and the lives and property of civilians must be protected.
She called on relevant parties to remain calm and exercise restraint, and to work for a de-escalation of regional tensions.
When asked about the situation in the Middle East, Mao said China has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the conflict, and advocated resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means so as to ultimately realize long-term peace and stability in the Middle East and the Gulf region.
China hopes all parties will properly resolve differences through dialogue and consultation, she said, adding that China will continue to make efforts to ease tensions and help restore peace.
