A Chinese military spokesperson on Thursday urged the Philippines to stop stirring up trouble in the South China Sea, warning that such actions will prove self-defeating.

Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks in response to Philippine claims accusing China of so-called harassment and dangerous maneuvers in the South China Sea.

According to the spokesperson, the Philippine side has recently intruded into the airspace over and waters adjacent to China's Huangyan Dao and the islands and reefs of China's Nansha Qundao.

It has also deliberately charged into Chinese exercise and training zones and even closed in on Chinese vessels in a dangerous manner, repeatedly committing rights violations and harassing acts, Zhang said.

Such moves have increased factors of insecurity and instability in the Asia-Pacific region, he added.

Zhang urged the Philippine side to stop counting on external forces to stir up trouble at sea, warning that such a scheme will prove self-defeating and fruitless.

He stressed that China remains unwavering in its resolve to safeguard territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests and will continue to take resolute countermeasures against any violations of rights and provocations.
