Treating gastric cancer: From 'silent killer' to curable disease

Gastric cancer is often called a "silent killer" because its early symptoms are subtle and easily overlooked. As a result, many patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage.

CGTN spoke with Ji Jiafu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Department of Surgery at Peking University Cancer Hospital. He said that with modern technology, early detection and proper treatment, many cancers can now be managed or even cured, transforming from a fatal disease into a chronic condition.

Globally, around one million new cases of gastric cancer are reported each year, nearly 450,000 of which are in China, Ji said. Helicobacter pylori infection, diet and lifestyle are major risk factors.

Clinical research led by Chinese researchers, including Ji, sheds new light on the treatment of gastric cancer. The research shows that neoadjuvant therapy, which is treatment aiming to shrink the tumor and improve surgical outcomes, can reduce postoperative recurrence by about 21%.

"Cancer is not as frightening as many people think. With a scientific approach and proper treatment, a large proportion of cases can be cured," Ji said.
