As leaders from Spain, Portugal, France, Canada, Finland, the UK, Germany, among others, line up in Beijing, the message is hard to ignore. When pressure politics replaces partnership, trust erodes. Allies are not subordinates, and cooperation is not obedience. Western leaders' recent visits to China reflect that pragmatism beats pressure, and partnership beats bullying. US hegemonism is increasingly deepening the rift with its allies.
