Who would have thought that the war on Iran could become the final straw that breaks NATO? The New York Times recently misprinted NATO's full name as the "North American Treaty Organization" — a nearly eighty-year-old organization, how could the NYT still get the headline wrong? This wasn't just a typo. It was an unconscious revelation: For the Americans, NATO is just their own tool. But Europe doesn't agree. Since the Iran war began, many European countries have openly opposed and refused to join the fight, while the US has plainly said it will remember this. A military alliance without political consensus is a paper tiger — it doesn't even know who to aim at. The end of NATO is not defeat at the hands of an enemy, but the loss of its meaning from within. Literally, a headline was wrong; symbolically, it signals the end of an era.
