Director:
Judy Hegarty Lovett
Genre:
Fiction, Drama
Country/Region of production:
Ireland
Synopsis:
A solitary narrator crawls through mud and darkness, recalling fragments of his past life. He loses his only possessions – a sack of tins – and discovers another creature, whom he names Pim (calling himself Bom). Through physical violence, he forces Pim to speak and share memories of the world above. After Pim vanishes, the narrator returns to solitude, now motionless, speculating about the existence of others like them. In the end, only the mud, the darkness and his own being remain certain.
Why we recommend it:
How It Is is originally a three-part novel by Samuel Beckett first published in French as Comment c'est in 1961 and then translated into English in 1964. As one of his least known works, the whole three parts were adapted as a film and premiered in 2021 at the Dublin Theatre Festival. The first part of the adapted drama was recommended with a five-star by The Irish Times. For lovers of drama and Irish literature, this is a film that you cannot miss.
