The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a blockade of Iranian ports on Wednesday.
In a statement detailing the military operation, Brad Cooper, commander of the CENTCOM, said that the US forces had completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea.
"A blockade of Iranian ports has been fully implemented as US forces maintain maritime superiority in the Middle East. An estimated 90% of Iran's economy is fueled by international trade by sea. In less that 36 hours since the blockade was implemented, US forces have completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea," the statement said.
Official sources in Tehran have yet to respond to the US military's claims of a total blockade.
In a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on April 13, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that any threat to security of the Strait of Hormuz would carry significant repercussions for global trade, highlighting Iran's consistent efforts to ensure safe passage in the strategic waterway, according to Tasnim news agency.
