Hello Amigos: A Mexican student's journey as a 'Guangzhou drifter'

Global Stringer

Miguel Angel Gonzalez Contreras moved from Mexico to China five years ago and is now a graduate student at Peking University. When he first arrived, he couldn't speak a single word of Chinese and even cried over the Chinese exams. However, he never thought of giving it up as he felt "the country held wonders" he had never seen before.

From metropolises like Shanghai and Beijing to the countryside of Shandong, over the past few years, Miguel has traveled to different places in China. And now, he has moved to Guangzhou to pursue his dreams as a social media influencer.

From assembling furniture to making his own breakfast, Miguel is building the framework of his own life as a Guangzhou drifter step by step, just like when he first learned Chinese, one character at a time.

Luckily, the aroma of morning tea in Guangzhou often reminds him of his hometown and helps him feel at home. In his spare time, Miguel also explores local shops and shares Chinese food and culture with people around the world through his social media channels. "I don't know where my journey will end. However, I do know that right now, this is where I want to be," Miguel told CGTN, "because every day here makes me feel like I'm learning something new."
