China's first domestically built 8G95 marine liquefied natural gas dual-fuel engine was delivered on Tuesday in Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province, marking a breakthrough in the country's construction of dual-fuel engines in this power class.

The engine will be installed on 24,000-TEU and 21,000-TEU ultra-large container ships.

The model, named 8G95ME-C10.5-GI-EcoEGR, stands 16 meters tall and weighs more than 1,600 tonnes. It can generate up to 74,725 horsepower, making it the most powerful high-pressure natural gas dual-fuel engine currently built in China.

The engine is equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation system, allowing it to meet International Maritime Organization emissions standards without the need for external emissions reduction devices.

Developers said the model offers advantages in safety, reliability, energy efficiency and lower emissions.

During the design and development process, the research team overcame several key technical challenges, including high-pressure direct natural gas injection into cylinders, high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation and dynamic cylinder control.
