German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said a minehunter, accompanied by a command and supply vessel, will be deployed to the Mediterranean, German media reported on Saturday.
The military deployment in the Strait of Hormuz would require authorization from the German federal parliament, the Bundestag, said Pistorius in an interview with Rheinische Post.
"To save time, we have decided to move part of our forces to the Mediterranean in advance so that no further time is lost once the mandate is approved," he said.
Pistorius noted that the German Navy is highly capable in detecting and clearing naval mines, adding that the planned deployment would leverage these capabilities.
He said that any potential German naval deployment to the Strait of Hormuz would be contingent on a cessation of hostilities.
"As one of the largest armed forces in Europe, we must assume responsibility," Pistorius said, adding that Germany is also aware it must not overstretch its military capabilities.
