As the Labor Day holiday approaches, China's film market is gearing up for nearly 20 new releases, spanning genres from historical epics and comedies to action, suspense, and animation. Presale box office revenue for the 2026 Labor Day lineup has already surpassed 25 million yuan (about $3.66 million), while China's total annual box office (including presales) has exceeded 12.8 billion yuan (about $1.87 billion).

Among the most anticipated titles is Cold War 1994, a prequel to the Cold War franchise. Featuring an all-star cast including Chow Yun-fat, Aaron Kwok, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Louis Koo, and Daniel Wu, the film revolves around a high-profile kidnapping case in 1994 that shook Hong Kong. In contrast, the heartfelt drama Being Towards Death offers a more intimate and emotional experience. The film follows a man who, after a failed suicide attempt, begins to rediscover purpose through interactions with terminally ill patients.

Adding international appeal to the lineup is The Devil Wears Prada 2. With Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt reprising their iconic roles, the film explores the evolution of the fashion industry in the digital age as well as the changing roles of women in the workplace.

With a diverse slate and strong early ticket sales, the 2026 Labor Day holiday is shaping up to be a vibrant moment for China's film industry.
