Staff at the Cibagou National Nature Reserve in Zayu County, Nyingchi, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, have identified clear infrared camera footage of a marbled cat captured earlier in the wild. It marks the first confirmed record of the elusive species in the reserve since its establishment in 1985.

The marbled cat, a second-class protected species in China, is a forest-dependent small carnivore known for its arboreal habits and largely nocturnal behavior, making it a rare sighting in the wild.

Its presence in Cibagou provides strong evidence of a well-preserved forest ecosystem, with intact structure, a stable food web and high environmental quality.

Reserve authorities say they will further expand and refine the infrared camera network, strengthen routine patrols and improve biodiversity monitoring systems.

Efforts will also be stepped up to support research and conservation of rare species, helping safeguard regional ecological security.
