To strengthen ecological protection and restoration in Xizang and further solidify the country's national ecological security barrier, China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) recently issued the revised edition of the Xizang ecological security barrier protection and construction plan.
The plan requires that by 2030, Xizang's forest coverage rate reaches 12.61% or more, grassland comprehensive vegetation coverage reaches 50% or more, the soil and water conservation rate (excluding freeze-thaw erosion) rises to 92.22%, protected areas account for more than one-third of the region's total land area, and the ecological environment quality steadily improves.
The plan aims to optimize the ecological security barrier system by implementing projects such as the protection and restoration of the northwestern Qiangtang Plateau ecosystem. It will also improve the system of protected areas and steadily advance the creation of national parks featuring alpine ecosystems and mountain cryospheres.
