Originally built in AD 605, Yingtianmen was the main southern gate of Luoyang's palace city during the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties. It witnessed major state ceremonies and diplomatic events, including the enthronement of Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history. The gate served for more than five centuries through rebuilding and repairs. It was reconstructed atop its original archaeological remains in the 2010s.
