As the sixth Asian Beach Games moved into the latter stages, host city Sanya has been using the event to showcase not only sporting action but also its growing economic strength, with CGTN Sports Scene's Shen Xiang taking a closer look at the developments behind the scenes.

Away from the beaches and competition venues, the focus shifts to the Sanya Central Business District (CBD), which is emerging as a key engine for Hainan Free Trade Port. Alongside the Sanya International Yacht Center and Phoenix Island International Cruise Port, these projects reflect the city's push for high-quality development following the launch of Hainan's customs closure operation.

The CBD plays a frontline role in the customs framework, supporting the "4+2" modern service industry system that combines cruise and yacht tourism, modern finance, and the digital economy. Together, these sectors are shaping a new growth model that connects the Games with the long-term vision for Sanya and Hainan.

The Sanya International Yacht Center highlights the expansion of the city's high-end maritime economy. Integrating yacht exhibition, sales, maintenance, tourism experiences and cultural innovation, the facility is designed as a comprehensive platform for the industry. Early indicators show strong growth, with 12 new yachts registered in the first month after the customs closure operation, alongside 22,100 yacht trips carrying a total of 122,000 passengers.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix Island International Cruise Port is strengthening Sanya's role as a gateway to global cruise routes. The terminal, part of the Sanya Port Area, includes an 80,000-ton-class berth and eight passenger channels for entry and exit. During the first quarter of the customs closure operation, it handled eight inbound and outbound cruise ship calls, processing more than 19,000 personnel.

Together, these projects underline how Sanya is leveraging its Free Trade Port status to drive economic growth, building a development model that complements the energy and visibility brought by the Asian Beach Games.
