China is expected to see a record surge in domestic travel during the upcoming five-day May Day holiday, with cross-regional passenger trips projected to reach 1.52 billion, an official at Ministry of Transport said on Tuesday.

Highways will be toll-free for five days during the holiday, with road travel dominating overall mobility. 

Road trips are expected to account for 91.6% of total passenger flow, while daily traffic on expressways is forecast to average about 64 million vehicles.

Rail and air travel will remain busy, with passenger volumes estimated at 107 million and 11.75 million, respectively.

Cross-border travel is also set to rise sharply. Daily inbound and outbound passenger flows are expected to average 2.25 million during the holiday period, peaking at more than 2.4 million in a single day, according to the National Immigration Administration.
