China's Mount Siguniang designated as UNESCO Global Geopark

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on April 27 presented certificates to newly designated UNESCO Global Geoparks around the world. Among them is Mount Siguniang, located in southwest China's Sichuan Province. 

Mount Siguniang is the first UNESCO Global Geopark on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, and also home to the largest number of peaks towering above 5,000 meters. Mount Siguniang covers an area of 2,764.01 square kilometers and is known for its complex tectonics, including folds, flysch deposits, and towering granite peaks.
