China urges Japan to destruct abandoned chemical weapons

China urges Japan to accelerate the thorough destruction of its abandoned chemical weapons (ACWs) on Chinese soil and to fulfill its due international obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Wednesday at a press conference in Beijing.

The appeal came on the 29th anniversary of the CWC's entry into force. Under the convention, Japan was required to complete the destruction of the ACWs by 2007, but the deadline has been postponed several times.
