Work on creating the murals in the Potala Palace's Great East Hall began in 1648. The finest painters, carpenters and metal artisans came together from across southwest China's Xizang. Among them was Choying Gyatso, a revered master of Tibetan painting. He'd been invited by the 5th Dalai Lama to undertake the monumental task of creating murals and thangkas for the palace. Some of his original works are still preserved inside the Great East Hall today and remain vividly colored after nearly 400 years. Today, young mural artist An Nianchu is reinterpreting and carrying forward this cultural and artistic legacy in her own way, extending a tradition that spans across time.
