In 1946, the International Military Tribunal for the Far East brought a painful memory to worldwide attention when it presented evidence of the Nanjing Massacre. Particularly powerful was the testimony of eyewitness John Gillespie Magee, chairman of the Nanjing branch of the International Red Cross. When he laid his photographic documentation before the court, nobody was left in any doubt as to the true scale of the atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese Army on that dark day in December 1937.
