When lung cancer no longer has to mean goodbye

Zhang Yuying

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. When tumors invade major blood vessels or the heart, many patients are labeled "inoperable" by traditional medical standards.

In CGTN's latest interview for Health Talk, we speak with Professor Zhou Qinghua, a pioneer in Chinese thoracic surgery from West China Hospital. Professor Zhou has dedicated his career to expanding the surgical boundaries for advanced lung cancer. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in complex reconstructive surgery, particularly in performing high-risk resections and vascular replacements for patients previously thought to be beyond help.

Professor Zhou's work has been instrumental in China's transition from following international protocols to leading global innovation in oncology. By integrating advanced surgical techniques with multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) and precision medicine, his team has significantly improved five-year survival rates for late-stage patients.

These clinical breakthroughs are transforming the prognosis of advanced lung cancer, shifting it from a terminal diagnosis toward a manageable condition and offering a vital lifeline where there was once only despair.
