Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a symposium on strengthening basic research in Shanghai on April 30. 

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed advancing basic research to build a stronger foundation for the country's scientific and technological development.
