China edged France 3-1 to retain the BWF Thomas Cup in an electrifying final in Horsens, Denmark, on Sunday. The triumph marked China's 12th title since the badminton tournament's inception in 1982, while the beaten French team nonetheless achieved its best-ever result.
Shi Yuqi got off to a winning start, overcoming Christo Popov in a grueling 85-minute battle to prevail 21-16, 16-21, 21-17.
The tide quickly shifted, however, as World No. 10 Alex Lanier leveled the overall score for France after blitzing China's Li Shifeng 21-13, 21-10 in just 43 minutes.
China regained the advantage following a thrilling contest between World No. 15 Weng Hongyang and Toma Junior Popov. After a hard-fought 96 minutes, Weng edged Popov 22-20, 20-22, 21-19, putting the Chinese side ahead 2-1.
The final point was then sealed by He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu, who dispatched Eloi Adam and Leo Rossi in the doubles match, prevailing 21-13, 21-16 to clinch the title.
On the women's side, the Republic of Korea lifted the Uber Cup, stunning defending champion China 3-1. The shock win gave the team its third crown, following previous victories in 2010 and 2022.
The opening singles match featured a highly-anticipated clash between the world's top two players. World No. 1 An Se-young thoroughly demonstrated her talent, outclassing second-ranked Wang Zhiyi 21-10, 21-13 in 47 minutes.
Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning leveled the overall score for China, however, taking their doubles match against Jeong Na-eun and Lee So-hee 21-15, 21-12.
Another momentum shift quickly followed, as China's former Olympic champion Chen Yufei succumbed to World No. 17 Kim Ga-eun, falling 21-19, 21-15 in the day's second singles and third overall encounter.
In the crucial fourth match, despite Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian claiming the first game 21-16, the recently-formed duo of Baek Ha-na and Kim Hye-jeong rallied to grab the win, snatching the next two games 21-10, 21-13 to wrap up the ROK's victory.
