China's May Day travel set to smash record with over 1.5 bln trips

The total volume of cross-regional passenger trips during China's five-day May Day holiday is estimated to have surpassed 1.5 billion, with an average of over 300 million trips per day, up 4% year on year, the Ministry of Transport said Tuesday.

On May 5 alone, the last day of the holiday, total inter-regional trips reached 290 million, marking an 8% increase from a year earlier. 

Breaking down the figures, railway passenger trips totaled 23 million on the day, a year-on-year increase of 9%. Road travel remained the dominant mode, up 8% to 263.7 million trips. 

Waterway passenger traffic reached 1.035 million trips, up 1.4%, while civil aviation handled 2.3 million trips, down 0.7% year on year.
