The Longmen Grottoes mark a high point in Chinese stone carving, with more than 2,300 caves and niches carved along a one-kilometer stretch of limestone cliffs. They house nearly 110,000 stone statues, over 60 stupas and around 2,800 inscriptions, most dating to the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties.
