The Longmen Grottoes reveal distinct charms by day and by night.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site in Luoyang, Henan Province is one of the finest examples of Buddhist art in China. Daylight reveals the intricate details of the statues and carvings, highlighting the remarkable artistic achievements of ancient China and drawing crowds of visitors from around the world.
As night falls, soft lighting illuminates select grottoes and niches. With fewer visitors, the site takes on a tranquil atmosphere, offering a more peaceful experience.
The Longmen Grottoes mark a high point in Chinese stone carving, with more than 2,300 caves and niches carved along a one-kilometer stretch of limestone cliffs. They house nearly 110,000 stone statues, over 60 stupas and around 2,800 inscriptions, most dating to the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties.
With their striking visual appeal and rich historical atmosphere, the grottoes have been featured in films such as the 1982 martial arts classic The Shaolin Temple and the Detective Dee series.
