Incense censers of Famen Temple: Fragrance, faith and Tang Dynasty craftsmanship

During the Tang Dynasty, foreign trade reached unprecedented heights, and a large number of spices entered the Central Plains through the Silk Road, making the incense culture increasingly rich and diverse. Burning incense could purify a sacred space and help practitioners quickly enter a state of stillness and meditative mindfulness. As an imperial temple and a Buddhist holy site, Famen Temple houses multiple gold and silver censers in its underground crypt. These censers are exquisitely crafted with ornate shapes and layered decorative patterns. Most are equipped with a base to prevent heat damage or surface scorching. Lifting the lid allows incense materials to be placed inside, while the openwork design on the lid guides the fragrance to disperse gracefully.
