China's 2026 May Day holiday box office closed at over 750 million yuan (about $110 million), surpassing last year's total for the same period. Over the five-day holiday release window this year, cinemas increased screening frequency, while the average ticket price fell to 36.4 yuan (about $5).

Leading the lineup was Vanishing Point, which grossed over 260 million yuan (about $38 million). Blending suspense, crime and thriller elements, the film gained traction through strong word-of-mouth. Shot on location in Chongqing, the movie also sparked a surge of interest in its filming locations.

Beyond ticket sales, this year's holiday underscored the growing impact of linking film consumption with tourism, retail and local services to unlock broader economic value. Across many cities, movie tickets doubled as discount passes. Audiences could use their stubs at participating businesses to access deals on dining, hotels and tourist attractions. No longer just watching stories unfold on screen, audiences are following them into cities, landscapes and cultural landmarks. For example, viewers of Blood-Spattered Cliff were offered discounted entry to local scenic spots in Tongren, Guizhou province. Through initiatives like these, films are increasingly functioning as gateways to wider cultural consumption.
