China's top legislator Zhao Leji on Wednesday called on the United States to view China and its development in an objective and rational manner during a meeting in Beijing with a visiting delegation of US senators led by Steve Daines.

Zhao, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said the stable, sound and sustainable development of China-US relations serves the common interests of the two peoples and meets the general expectations of the international community.

Since last year, under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China-US relations have achieved overall stability, Zhao pointed out.

China is willing to work with the US side to implement the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state, strengthen dialogue and communication, properly manage differences and expand practical cooperation, he added.

Zhao stressed that the Taiwan question is at the very core of China's core interests and is the most important issue in China-US relations.

He expressed hope that the US would strictly abide by the one-China principle and handle Taiwan-related issues prudently and appropriately.

Zhao also said that China's National People's Congress is willing to strengthen exchanges with the US Congress and promote more dialogue, communication and mutual visits between the two legislative bodies.

He noted that the senators' visit would help enhance China-US engagement and legislative exchanges, adding that China welcomes more US lawmakers to visit the country.
