The 29th crested ibis chick of the year hatched on Wednesday at a breeding center in Deqing County in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province. With this new arrival, the total population of crested ibises in Zhejiang has now passed 1,000.

Often called the "Jewel of the East," the crested ibis is a rare and endangered bird. Since 2008, when 10 birds were brought from Shaanxi, Deqing County has focused on breeding, relocating, and reintroducing the species into the wild.

Today, 531 birds live in the wild, while 469 remain under human care – a clear sign of the species' remarkable recovery.
