The khakkhara (monk's staff) is one of the important Buddhist implements carried by monks during their travels. The khakkhara treasured in the Famen Temple Museum was specially commissioned by Emperor Yizong of Tang for the ceremonial ushering in and out of the Buddha's finger bone relic. The staff is entirely crafted from gold and silver, engraved with motifs of interlocking vines and the Twelve Great Bodhisattvas of the Perfect Enlightenment, radiating a brilliant golden luster. The staff features the form of the highest hierarchical standard for Buddhist khakkhara, reserved exclusively for Shakyamuni Buddha, symbolizing supreme authority.
