Fuel prices in the US have surged about 42%, outpacing Southeast Asia's initial 37% spike, said Karen Young, senior research scholar at the Centre on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University SIPA.
She warned that America is now feeling the oil supply crunch equally or more severely than the eastern nations that were first hit.
