Labour and the Conservatives, the two main parties who have alternated in power since World War Two, have suffered huge losses to the left-wing Green and right-wing Reform parties, with the centrist Liberal Democrats also gaining.
While England grapples with a switch to a genuine multiplicity of parties, Scottish and Welsh nationalist parties look set to control the devolved country assemblies – raising the prospect of further divisions.
