US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff met with Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani on Saturday in Miami to discuss the ceasefire deal between Washington and Iran, according to American media Axios.
"The Secretary expressed appreciation for Qatar's partnership on a range of issues," spokesperson for the US Department of State Tommy Pigott said in a statement on the meeting, highlighting the Gulf state's role as a key intermediary for Washington as it awaited Tehran's response on a peace proposal.
"The Secretary and the Foreign Minister also discussed US support for Qatar's defense, and the importance of continued close coordination to deter threats and promote stability and security across the Middle East," he added.
On the same day, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani also held a phone call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, urging the US and Iran to adopt positions characterized by "responsibility" and "wisdom" during this delicate stage.
During the phone call, the two top diplomats called for full reliance diplomacy to settle disputes, stressing the importance of supporting the negotiation process between the two sides, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
The two officials also reviewed developments of the negotiating track between Washington and Tehran, emphasizing that the sustainability of regional security and stability is primarily based on prioritizing political solutions in a way that preserves the resources of the peoples of the region.
