Editor's note: CGTN's First Voice provides instant commentary on breaking stories. The column clarifies emerging issues and better defines the news agenda, offering a Chinese perspective on the latest global events.
The issue of strategic perception is always fundamental to the China-US relationship, just like the first button of a shirt that must be put right. So, what is the biggest misunderstanding the United States currently has about China? Drawing on their own experiences of living and working in both China and the United States, three American influencers share their views on biases in US media coverage, the lack of deep understanding of China in American society, and the benefit of China-US cooperation. As one of them puts it: "They look at China, and they think this and that, but they don't really bother to get to the root of how it all got there." To properly fasten the "first button" of China-US relations, the United States must first correct the misunderstandings in its strategic perception of China, abandon its misconceptions, and understand the real, stable, civilized, and peaceful China with objectivity and respect, and recognize how beneficial to the development of both countries and the world if China and the US could work together.
