In April 1984, during a state visit to China, then US President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy Reagan traveled to Xi'an to see one of the country's most extraordinary archaeological wonders – the Terracotta Warriors. Their visit came at a time when China-US relations were steadily improving.

Descending into the 10-meter-deep excavation pit, the Reagans listened attentively to the introduction and observed the life-sized figures of soldiers, horses and chariots with fascination. The intricate craftsmanship of the relics left a strong impression, reflecting the sophistication of China's ancient civilization and the role of cultural heritage in fostering mutual understanding.

Amid the sense of awe, there was also a lighter moment. Turning to one of the terracotta horses, Reagan reportedly joked, "May I touch it? I know it can't kick me."
