The Beijing Ducks stormed back from an early double-digit deficit to defeat the Guangdong Southern Tigers 88-73 at home on Tuesday, clinching their quarterfinal series in the CBA Playoffs 2-1 and booking a semifinal showdown against the Shanghai Sharks.
Beijing turned the game around with a dominant stretch that started late in the second quarter, and never looked back, ending Guangdong's season in the round of eight.
Eugene German put together an all-around masterclass for the Ducks, finishing with a triple-double of 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, while also recording three steals. Zhou Qi bounced back from a difficult Game 2 performance with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, anchoring the home team's efforts on both ends of the floor.
The Southern Tigers appeared to be in control early, after Du Runwang drilled a three-pointer to extend the visiting side's lead to 32-22 in the second quarter. But Beijing responded with a decisive 18-0 run that completely shifted the momentum.
Trevelin Queen finally ended Guangdong's scoring drought – which lasted nearly five minutes – by drawing a foul on a three-point attempt. But the Southern Tigers never regained their earlier rhythm.
Both teams struggled offensively in a physical second half dominated by defensive intensity. The Ducks repeatedly attacked the paint and capitalized at the free throw line, with Zhou converting eight of his 12 foul shots to help Beijing stay in control.
Queen led all scorers with 25 points for the Southern Tigers, but endured a difficult shooting night from beyond the arc, missing eight of his nine three-point attempts.
The defeat marked a disappointing end to the season for the 11-time CBA champions, who were unable to recover after the Ducks snatched the momentum shortly before halftime.
"We overcame ourselves and the pressure, showed our true level and won the game," said Beijing head coach Xu Limin. "We did a lot of work after our defeat in Game 2. We watched the footage closely and discussed it with our team. In my opinion, our performance this time relied on our attitude, determination and confidence."
The Ducks will next face the Sharks in Game 1 of their best-of-five semifinal series on Friday in Shanghai.
