Russia successfully test-launched its latest Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Tuesday, TASS news agency reported.

The Sarmat ICBM boasts a range of over 35,000 kilometers, and the warhead yield is more than four times greater than any Western equivalent, according to Commander of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces Sergei Karakayev.

The Sarmat ICBM system is capable of breaching all current and prospective missile defense networks, and can reliably strike assigned targets and perform strategic deterrence missions, significantly enhancing Russia's combat capabilities, said Karakayev.

He added that the first missile regiment equipped with the Sarmat system will enter combat duty with the Uzhur Missile Division before the end of this year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin heard the report of the test launch on Tuesday.

He said the successful test launch marked a major milestone in the development of Russia's strategic nuclear forces. He stressed that the deployment of the missile would effectively counter any external threats.
