These Tang Dynasty (618-907) nested reliquary caskets are a set of gold and silver containers created to enshrine the true finger bone relic of Shakyamuni Buddha. It was unearthed in 1987 from the underground crypt of Famen Temple. The reliquary originally consisted of eight nested boxes. Since the outermost sandalwood box had already decayed by the time of excavation, only seven tiers remain, inside which lies an imitation shadow relic of the Buddha's finger. In terms of craftsmanship, this national treasure brings together the finest Tang dynasty techniques—including bas-relief carving, engraving, inlaid gems and pearl ornamentation—resulting in a magnificent design of surpassing elegance.
