The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi on May 14 announced plans to build a massive spherical immersive experience center in the United Arab Emirates with a total investment of approximately $1.7 billion.

Set to be located within Abu Dhabi's core entertainment district on Yas Island, the project called the "Sphere" is scheduled for completion in 2029.

Abu Dhabi tourism officials said the project, expected to accommodate 20,000 spectators, will bring a significant increase in international tourists annually and establish itself as a new technology-driven tourism destination in the region.

Asked about the decision to launch a new project at a time when the geopolitical situation remained unclear, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, the chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, responded with figures from March, when the region was troubled by geopolitical conflicts. At the time, the hotel occupancy rate in Abu Dhabi was still 56%, and museums, parks and shopping malls remained open. He said Abu Dhabi is focused on long-term development.

This latest initiative is a key component of Abu Dhabi's Tourism Strategy 2030, aiming to further reduce its dependence on the oil economy and diversify its industries by introducing a high-tech entertainment landmark. The strategy aims to increase the number of visitors to 39.3 million, while boosting the sector's GDP contribution to 90 billion UAE dirham ($24.5 billion) by 2030.

Within this strategic framework, cooperation with China in the cultural field has been given prominence. Abu Dhabi sees China as a cultural partner, the chairman said. Many elements that relate to China can already be seen in museums in Abu Dhabi, he said, adding that the cultural exchange does not stop there. Abu Dhabi recently invited some top Chinese musicians to play at a concert that drew huge crowds.

Asked what Abu Dhabi's next big project is, Al Mubarak said he would like to keep it a surprise, but hinted that another announcement in the coming months would cement the city's position as a global hub for music and live entertainment.
