The Abu Dhabi Culture and Tourism Authority in the United Arab Emirates on May 14 announced the construction of a spherical immersive experience center called the "Sphere".

The project, set to be located on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi's core entertainment district, represents a total investment of approximately $1.7 billion. The venue is scheduled for completion in 2029 and will be able to accommodate 20,000 spectators.

Abu Dhabi's tourism and culture sector anticipates that the project will bring a significant increase in international tourists annually and establish itself as a new technology tourism destination in the region.

When asked why they chose to announce the decision to launch a new project at a time when the geopolitical situation is still unclear, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, the chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, responded with figures from March, when the region was troubled by geopolitical conflicts. The hotel occupancy rate in Abu Dhabi then was still 56%, according to the chairman, and museums, parks and shopping malls remained open. He said Abu Dhabi is eyeing long-term development.

This initiative is a key component of Abu Dhabi's "Tourism Strategy 2030," aiming to further reduce its dependence on the oil economy and diversify its industries by introducing a high-tech entertainment landmark. The Tourism Strategy 2030 aims to increase the number of visitors to 39.3 million, while boosting the sector's GDP contribution to AED 90 billion ($24.5 billion) by 2030.

Within this strategic framework, cooperation with China in the cultural field has been given prominence. Abu Dhabi sees China as a culture partner, the chairman said. Many aspects that relate to China can be seen in museums in Abu Dhabi, and the cultural exchange doesn't stop there. Abu Dhabi recently invited some top Chinese musicians to play at a concert, witnessing a huge crowd.

When asked what's the next big project for Abu Dhabi, the chairman said he would like to keep it a surprise, but hinted that another announcement in the coming months would cement Abu Dhabi's position as a global hub for music and live entertainment.
